United We Stand

Welcome to the August edition of Ron's Newsletter.
Just let me say, [woo hoo] taking two weeks of vacation in a row  has been NICE! Enjoyed the bumper cars, barbeques, bonfire and picnics, took in a couple of fair concerts and saw the Platters, the Drifters, Peter Noone and Clay Aiken. Now, while I still have time, I need to do what needs done around the house, (and why I took the time off in the first place). [grin] And, hope you like the new look of this month's newsletter. Comments invited.remember our troops

TV Guide on the Internet Get the free TitanTV online listings guide on the internet to see TV program schedules. Here's how I customized mine. After registering, click the Command Center in the toolbar and choose Command Center Preferences. Then choose Programming Guide from the menu on the left. I unchecked "Short Descriptions" in the Customize Programming Guide Preferences menu in order to keep the grid uncluttered. Also, I checked "PopUp Menu" so a small box appears with the program description when I hover my mouse over the program's title. Play with the preferences to set it up anyway you like, just do it before the spouse - [grin]. read more at TitanTV.

The Doom 3 Invasion has begun!... The much-anticipated DOOM 3 is in stores now. Four years after setting out to remake one of the most popular and violent video games ever, the crew at id Software Inc. is finally done with its latest vision of hell. The $55 computer game sequel typifies the first person shooter genre that id Software pioneered in the early 1990s with the original "Doom,""Quake" and "Wolfenstein 3D". Gamers run and gun through hordes of monsters or other enemies in three dimensions. With each release, the visuals, sound and other effects have improved. "Doom 3" is by far the most realistic and looks nearly equal to animated films like "Shrek 2." The official DOOM 3 web site is www.doom3.com. On the site, you can browse through screenshots, download desktop images, see a short clip of the DOOM 3 theme song and watch trailers. The company is already working on an XBox version of the game. Read more details at Gamespot.

Men? -- if you buy one book -- this is it!...Woman Power: Transform Your Man, Your Marriage, Your Life
If you're a married woman and think you may want a little help making your marriage better, Dr. Laura Schlessinger's latest book and her seventh bestseller could have some answers. The book helps women re-discover and enjoy the "power" of being a woman and by simply using "the niceness of the feminine touch," women "have almost magical powers" to singlehandedly improve their marital relationships. She goes on to say that "most women have been blinded to caring about what their men think, feel, and want." She never discusses what men can do to improve a marriage, instead she reiterates why it's the woman's responsibility to change first -- "because we have more power to transform our men than they have to transform us." It's available at Amazon for $16.07.

Survey Sez !... According to a survey by Forrester Research, an independent technology research company, Use of Google and Yahoo as search engines are tied, each with 40 percent of Web surfers. PC sales are dominated by Dell, at 31 percent of the market, trailed by Hewlett-Packard at 24 percent and Gateway at 9 percent. Apple shows up with 6 percent. The study also says, "Although games are the most important PC entertainment activity, it's digital music that's changing the face of the PC." Consumers are treating PCs as personal digital-music jukeboxes, where they store CDs, download new tunes, and refuel their MP3 players. Broadband is in 23.1 million U.S. homes, and nearly 8 million more households are expected to join that number next year. Broadband households, not surprisingly, spend four more hours each week online than dial-up users. However, those online via broadband represent only 18.3 percent of all U.S. households. More than 50 percent of households now have DVD players. Ownership of digital cameras has leaped 26 percent, due to falling prices and easier-to-use cameras. Read more.

New Local Search Engines!... Internet giant Yahoo, in its attempt to improve the World Wide Web's focus on local information, is unveiling a new search site that promises to provide a more precise guide to neighborhood businesses. Reflecting the experimental nature of the site, Yahoo initially isn't linking to the local search engine from its main Web site. Ahh, but we got the link for you here. http://local.yahoo.com
Google had already introduced a similar product last March http://local.google.com/ and Ask Jeeves plans to announce a partnership with CitySearch in its bid for local search results delivered on http://ask.com.

the New Update for XP!... the security-oriented Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) promises more resistance to viruses and attacks. New features in SP2 include an improved Windows Firewall which will be set in a mode called On With No Exceptions. This means that all inbound Internet traffic will be denied until the user changes the setting. Also included, the latest version of the Windows Media Player and a new Windows Security Center, which acts as a dashboard to alert users when it detects changes in XP's security status, it's an all-in-one view of your security settings. Microsoft has no plans to make these security enhancements to earlier versions of Windows. Downloading the 80mb service pack will take about 60-90 minutes for broadband users and up to 10 hours for those with a dial-up connection.

funny     J-O-K-E  of  the  M-O-N-T-Hfunny

I recently picked a new primary care physician. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing fairly well  for my age.

A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking him, "Do you think I'll live to be 80?"

He asked," Well, do you smoke tobacco or drink beer?"

"Oh no," I replied. "I've never done either."

Then he asked, "Do you eat steaks and barbecued ribs?"

I said "No, I've heard that all red meat is very unhealthy!"

"Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, ballooning or rock climbing?"

"No, I do not." I said.

He said, "Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or sexually fool around?"

"No," I said. "I've never done any of those things."

He looked at me and asked, "Then why do you give a shit, if you live to be 80?
