The Texas native's path to stardom began when a school teachers' sensitive "musical ear"
overheard the then-13-year-old Kelly Clarkson, singing in a school corridor and encouraged her to join the choir.
Kelly developed her voice over the years while working odd jobs and performing in state competitions. A move to
Los Angeles after HS graduation turned into disaster when her apartment building burned down. She was suddenly
homeless. She moved back to Texas where her best friend, Jessica, convinced her to try out for American Idol.
She won with 57% of the votes, and stole the hearts of TV viewers.
While a contestants' charm and vocal talent may play out well on TV, that success doesn't always translate into a
hit album or a lasting career. But Kelly silenced any doubters -- less than two weeks after her big win -- with her
first release, "A Moment Like This/Before Your Love." The single sold nearly a quarter million copies in one
week then jumped over fifty spots the following week to the No. 1 position on the Billboard charts.
Kelly's debut album, Thankful, proves the American Idol audience didn't make the wrong choice in
choosing her to be pop music's next superstar. Upon its April 2003 release, 'Thankful' debuted in the No. 1 spot on
the Billboard Album Charts,
and went gold in only 3 weeks, and platinum in just 5 weeks.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW:
Justin Guarini, last year's runner-up, released his self-titled debut on June 10.
Tamyra Gray, who placed fourth in the original "American Idol", will release her debut in October.
Carmen Rasmusen, the 18-year-old blonde beauty from this season, is in negotiations for a movie role, although she's focused now on preparing for this summer's "American Idol" tour. "I've been working a lot with my singing teacher, picking new and exciting songs," Rasmusen said.
Ryan Starr, the rabble-rouser from last year, is recording with producer Jed Leiber (Jeff Beck). She's also designing clothes and pursuing acting, most likely a play or something short-term to leave time for her album. "It's very edgy," Starr said of her music. "It's gonna be rock and roll, like hard rock and roll."
Vanessa Olivarez, the first of this season's final 12 to be voted off, is in negotiations for a sitcom and has also had stage offers. She's lobbying to be a part of the "American Idol" tour.
RJ Helton, a finalist from the first season, will release his debut album in November on the gospel label Gospocentric/B-Rite Music. "I'm doing some inspirational music, kind of getting back to my roots and doing some Latin and pop, R&B, " Helton said. "It's going to be really interesting."
A.J. Gil, another finalist from last year, is releasing his first single, "I Got the Hots for You," in the coming weeks.
Kimberley Locke has been signed to Curb Records.
